Every town had gorgeous views of the mountains and all seem to have beautiful churches. However, here we have the beautiful mountains, beautiful church.....but what is wrong with this picture! Yes, even deep into Austria, we saw McD's!
As we approach the first mountain pass which will take us into Italy, we stopped for a break and met some new friends. All the cows in this area wore rather loud bells around their necks, these young ones were quite friendly!
Here is the toll both that provides entry into Italy. For a one-way toll, we paid 14 Euros. Other than the fee, there was no other entry check or requirements, just pay the little old man in the toll booth and off you go.
And then the fun begins! The switchbacks that we drove today are unbelievable. In addition to the sheer number of them and their 180 degree turns (seriously), it is compounded by the fact that you have tour buses, hundreds of motorcyclists, hundreds of bicyclists and then just plain bad drivers! We had several close calls -- but managed to survive. It is sort of like combining the "road to Hana" with the road to Pike's Peak and throwing in a bit of rush hour traffic. The picture below doesn't do it justice -- let's just say that these roads put the 'hair' in hairpin turns.
